Laura Engelmann, MHA, is Community Health and Wellness manager for AtlantiCare, a member of Geisinger. She leads AtlantiCare’s Healthy Schools, Healthy Children program and its Growing Green Initiative.
The AtlantiCare Healthy Schools, Healthy Children program brings local chefs and farmers to partner schools. In 2018, they visited 21 schools in Atlantic, Cape May and southern Ocean counties, allowing 950 students to taste a classroom-prepared recipe while learning about the importance of sustainable local agriculture. AtlantiCare has also helped grow 62 school gardens and 29 community gardens through the Growing Green Initiative.
In a response to the lack of available fresh produce in Atlantic City and with the help of volunteers, three times a month, AtlantiCare hosts a free distribution of fruits and vegetables. In 2018 in partnership with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, this effort allowed 139,000 of fresh fruits and vegetables to be distributed to the Atlantic City community. AtlantiCare also launched the AtlantiCare Summer Meals: Lunch & Learn Series and in 2018 more than 2,200 healthy meals were served to children and family members in Atlantic City.
Prior to joining AtlantiCare, Engelmann served as social worker and health educator for a number of organizations.
